At Cottonwood Landscapes, LLC, our vision is your vision. With over three decades of experience, we've helped many Utahns realize their vision with premier landscape design and installation in UT. Our team works to maintain our reputation of quality work and professionalism. We are proud of the work we do.
Cottonwood landscaping is very good at designing your yard. They are personable. They are excited and motivated and supportive and eager to make your project magnificent call them today.
Dan and his professional team have completed three separate landscaping projects in 2023. We signed our next contract for two additional projects in 2025. Dan Cloward treats us like family. He does it all from design to finished job. Gordon Foote
The folks at Cottonwood were awesome from start to finish. They were able to help us design something that perfectly fit how we wanted to use it, even amongst historical permitting and a lot of physical space limitations. Their workers were clean, conscientious and very friendly. They worked very quickly and their attention to detail is amazing. If we had another yard to work with, we would absolutely hire them again.
Very pleased with the results of the landscaping. All the workers were prompt and professional. Everything looks beautiful. Very proud to show our friends, family and neighbors.
Dan Cloward came to my home on May 7th to quote out an awning for our home. I expected to see the quote 24-48 hours later since this is the level of service, I’d received from the other comparative quotes I'd been working on. He did not send me quote till May 20th 13 days later. The quote he sent was a single sentence with a price. Essentially this wasn't a big enough project to peak Dan's interest, so I got the lazy response. This to me means this company is only going to help you if you have large $10K+ jobs and they don't have the courtesy to tell you to your face they are not interested. If companies only want certain size jobs, then stop wasting our time and just tell us (the consumer) to our face, we'll appreciate the candor i promise.
From the initial meeting to completing the with they were a pleasure to do business with!! They were very responsive, professional, and did an absolutely amazing job. The only way you can even tell they were here was our new patio and landscaping! They cleaned up absolutely everything- I will definitely work with them again!
After wasting 18 months and a whole lot of $ with yet another chalk full of fail contractor, we finally found one leading a team that truly knows what they're doing! From the outset, Cottonwood Landscapes provided thorough and detailed estimates, set clear expectations and provided a comprehensive plan for our project. Their consistency in progress has been remarkable. Every step was well-communicated and executed in a timely fashion, ensuring no surprises or delays. The quality of their work has been truly outstanding. Each aspect of our COMPLEX project has been produced with the highest level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. This is undoubtedly a testament to their exceptionally experienced staff, who not only have developed decades of extensive knowledge through their successes, but also possess a genuine passion for what they do. They show up every day before 8:00 AM regardless of rain, snow, or freezing cold temperatures. I can happily confirm what was told to me, "They're who you call when everyone else tells you it's impossible", and "They're head and shoulders above every other contractor in Utah". Cottonwood Landscapes has been incredibly easy to work with, always accommodating our preferences and offering expert advice. Their commitment to integrity and customer satisfaction is evident in every interaction, making them a standout choice for anyone seeking top-notch landscaping or building services. If you're looking for a landscaping company that combines expertise, quality, and excellent customer service, look no further than Cottonwood Landscapes. They have exceeded my expectations in every way, and I am confident they will do the same for you. Happy to provide additional details to anyone interested.
Cottonwood Landscapes (CL) re-landscaped about half of my backyard and built an outdoor kitchen and fire pit. You should know that the Owner, Dan and his brother, Nate, are very good at selling you a bill of goods. They are very personable and very smooth talkers. Their line is that CL isn't the cheapest company, but they are by far the highest quality. Since I was looking for quality and Dan was very convincing, I went ahead with them, even though their bid was the highest. 1) Their contract was very heavily weighted toward advance payment with a large majority of the payment being due before completion. I negotiated something more reasonable. And it didn't occur to me that I'd be ripped off with sparsely placed, very small plants, so I didn't ask that the contract indicate their size in laymen's terms - my bad! 2.) The quality was poor. ALL of the plants were all incredibly small. And because the contract wasn't in laymen's terms, I had no recourse. I was told by Nate that everything they planted was designed to grow and fill in fast. No reasonable person would look at our yard now and say the plantings are full, in year 3. We were definitely overcharged on plant size and quality. And parts of the install were not only sparsely planted, but with absolutely no symmetry or pattern. Basically, the plants were just randomly stuck in the ground. When I asked Dan about it later, he told me I hadn't asked for a "formal" style of landscape design. Wow! 3.) Throughout the projects there were repeated attempts to get me to accept product that was damaged (fire pit ring, fridge door, grill cover, granite), and work that was unfinished (grill cabinet, landscaping). When I insisted that the items be addressed, almost every issue required multiple calls to CL, with most resulting in promises of returned calls which never came, or a promise to be back on site at a certain time, which didn't happen. Then when they did finally return, it would be with no advance notice. And there were several instances of them not accepting responsibility and trying to blame the condition of things on me (fridge door, dead tree, dead plants). 4.) Very bad communication, especially after the install, as stated above. On both projects, they requested final payment before final completion, with the woman doing so being quite demanding and borderline rude. And once they are paid, they don't want to speak with you again. It literally took me months to get them to address a dead tree. Twice! The best quality of service and response that I had in dealing with them was by far and away from their subcontractors, Marathon Electric and JR Broderick Plumbing. 5.) They nickle and dimed me to death. They don't tell you in advance that they will plant so sparsely with such small plants that you will want to add plants (that they will charge you through the nose for). They don't tell you in advance that you will need mulch or wood chips (that they will charge you through the nose for), or that their mulch is very poor quality and short-lived (1 season). And on one visit when I asked Nate for a quote to sell me a couple of shrubs to replace ones that the dog had chewed, I was quoted a price that was TWICE the cost of the same plant type at Millcreek Gardens (not on sale and 50% larger than the ones Cottonwood planted). That's when I was certain I was being taken for a ride. 6.) When I tried to get them to replace a pine tree that died within 8 months, it took easily a dozen texts and calls and several months. When the replacement tree also died within 8 months, it was the same experience, but they accepted no responsibility, because their warranty is just for "workmanship". Workmanship? On live plants? Shameful. If you have yet to make the mistake that I did and are still considering using them, 1) See Yelp, and 2) Get in the contract a reasonable payment schedule, the size and number of plants, and details of their warranty. And then be prepared to have to work your butt off to get them to deliver what they promised.
I hired Cottonwood Landscapes for 3 projects over 2 summers. A phenomenal job on the paver patio, the focal point of the yard. They were able to provide me with a landscaping vision that I could understand. I had bids from other companies who wanted to cut corners and use low quality materials. The plants and trees that were planted grew well. Their 6 inch steel edging is great. Drip watering in all planter beds.
Amazing work. Our backyard is a beautiful place to sit in the morning.
I am a former gardener
Built my dream waterfall and pond beyond my expectations and has taken care of our sprinkler and water system needs for years. Definitely would highly recommend!!
Cottonwood Landscapes built a 20 semi-circular raised patio with pavers, along with some related projects that also involved electrical, carpentry and masonry. My feedback is very positive. Their design skills are excellent. They had a much better vision of the finished product than I did. Their crews were professional, dependable and talented. They knew what they were doing and showed up for a full day of work every day. They also had very good masonry and carpentry subs. And they were generally responsive and easy to work with. I will say this--they arent cheap. There were some charges that had me scratching my head and we did have a few back and forths. But the questionable charges were relatively small compared to the overall price and I would much rather have a finished product that I love than take a minor price reduction. I would recommend them with confidence, especially for those with high standards.
Very unprofessional and not honorable ppl
Looking for a Trustworthy Company with integrity? Look elsewhere!!!! They will nickel and dime your project all while milking you for what youve got. Keep looking the right company is out there somewhere!
They were very professional showing up exactly when they said they would, and things looked exactly how they described. And whenever anything did deviate from expectations, they were quick with communications. I could not expect anything more.
Cottonwood did a great job with our paver and firepit installation. Very detail oriented and painstaking in their work. We are very pleased with the patio lighting scheme they designed. We have received many positive comments from friends and family and highly recommend Cottonwood Landscapes.
Not easy to locate, lacking any signage, but I was finally able to find the right Building.
Overall I would say I am pleased with the design process and the installation. I had them regrade the slope and replace almost everything in my back yard. They replaced some clay with soil, regraded everything to slope away from the house, added a paver walkway, installed sod, and several other items. The workers showed up on time and worked very hard to get job done right and in a timely manner. The landscaping is beautiful, the paver walkway looks amazing, and most of the project looks great. You can tell that they know what they are doing and care about their work. My only frustrations were how they accidentally broke a rock feature and also how they missed some quality checks. Missing paver sand, pop up drains being buried too deep, and other minor items would all be quick and easy fixes if they had inspected the work or else responded to my requests before the ground froze. The good news is that they agreed to look at the missed items, and they agreed to fix them later but I will have to wait 3-4 months for the ground to thaw and then hope that they are still willing to resolve everything then. They definitely got the most important things completed correctly in this project, and it really does look great. But it would have been a better experience if the final touches had been completed correctly and in a timely manner.
The people working in this company are honest hard-working individuals they get the job done and it looks amazing afterwards we are always sure to clean up as we go honesty and integrity is super important and this company has it
These guys are AMAZING!!!! They really value the community they are in. Thanks for allowing the public to receive your excess products at no cost.
Excellent works. Good materials and their workers very attentive to the demands of their clients, very clean and orderly, Guaranteed work... I highly recommend them.
Cottonwood is incredible. After having a terrible experience with another landscaper who shall not be named, Dan and team came in and were so communicative, logical, consultative, and were a pleasure to work with. We had a few small snags which is expected. I didnt love that time & equipment was charged because it cost me more than expected in the end (rather than seeing the full bid price up front for parts of the work). Overall super happy with their work and they rescued me from an entire backyard overhaul project gone bad from another company. Thanks!
Was recommended to them by my brother. Very impressed with their work. Great attention to detail and very professional. Planning on using them again for future projects.
The Cottonwood Landscape team started sooner than anticipated which was great. They were fast, professional, and did an amazing job. We could not be more happy with how the project turned out! We highly recommend them and would use their services again.
They did an amazing job on our large retaining wall. The work was done quickly and they communicated throughout the whole project. I would have them complete another job for us in a heartbeat!!
Last year my wife and I met Nate. Our first impression was that he was professional and friendly. They started our job a couple days late, but no big deal. The workers that did our yard were amazing and hard working. They completed the job on time and my wife and I were very happy with the way things turned out. But then we had some minor problems, we had an issue with the irrigation system and 2 sprinklers that werent working. We had to deal with Nestor which was a nightmare, he had excuses every time we spoke. Trying to reach anyone for assistance was extremely frustrating and time consuming because they would miss all their appointments. One day, we finally got Allen to show up, but he was an hour late because he took a nap in our driveway before he knocked on our door. You would expect professional people when you re paying top dollar. When I turned on the sprinklers this spring, I had another problem. All the sprinkler valves are stuck open and dont respond to the timer box. Sheryl told me that they would send somebody over. That was 2 weeks ago and still nothing. Nate the owner is great at first, but after they get paid, good luck trying to get a hold of him again. *** UPDATE *** The day after I posted the above 1-star review, they came out and fixed the sprinklers and explained to us what we had to do for next winter. Overall, were satisfied with their work so we plan to reach out to them this year to finish planting our trees and doing the flower beds around the house.
Andreas and the crew did an excellent job and are very hard workers.
Impressed. Our project turned out to be everything we wanted and more. The crews showed up every morning prior to their start time and cleaned up at the day. Not just pickup but push broom and put all their tools away. Communication was great. I would highly recommend them!
In September, 2012, Cottonwood did a major project for me by redesigning and reconstructing a portion of my back yard that involved significant tear-out of existing landscape, contour shaping and installation of designer-manufactured concrete pavers, manufactured concrete block holding wall and planting area, designer-manufactured concrete steps, rustic beam pergola and a sandstone outdoor fireplace with storage area, an ornamental fence with two security gates and new, sloping planting beds - total cost of $40,000+. In July, 2013, Cottonwood designed a new patio, walkway and steps with appropriate landscaping for the remaining portion of my back yard. They removed the existing brick wall, steps, lawn, sprinkler connections and concrete. Prepared, graded and Installed new designer concrete pavers, high-quality pre-formed concrete steps to my deck with matching platforms, new sprinkler system for the area, installed a 68 ornamental fence with security gate. They re-designed the area with large quartzite boulders resulting in sloping planting beds. They provided all plants and new grass. This is my second project with this company total cost of $16,000+. In Feb. and March, 2014, Cottonwood designed and installed new front steps, paver walkways, sprinkler system and rock gardens consisting of manufactured concrete block steps, designer concrete slab pavers, iron bannisters, quartzite boulders and various plantings. Total cost $16,000+. In September and October, 2015, Cottonwood designed, installed and stained a rough-sawn beam and post 14 x20 carport with wood trusses, pitched roof with asphalt shingles and interior lighting. Total cost $17,000+. In Nov. and December, 2015, Cottonwood replaced a front yard wood-rail fence. The new fence consisted of rough-sawn posts and rails in an architecturally angular design with an added, at center, heavy timber, decorative arbor with electric outlets. Total cost $5,000+ Summary: Over the last four years, Cottonwood Landscapes has completed five significant and well-designed improvements to my exterior landscape. Through each of these experiences, I found this local company very professional, extremely skilled and able to deal with all the issues and unsuspecting problems that arise with these types of projects. Their construction crews are outstanding with experienced staff and hands-on supervision. All were very efficient in time management and the crews are very responsive and extremely hard working. All five projects were started and completed on time. Also, the in-house design team was very helpful for addressing issues and landscaping alternatives. I was very impressed with how effectively each phase of the projects were organized, scheduled and staffed. I should add that projects of this size require heavy equipment which can result in significant damage to surrounding areas. Cottonwood did a masterful job in reducing collateral damage. Their cleanup at completion was excellent on each project. Management is experienced, extremely ethical, well organized and addresses customer issues with promptness, sincere concern and fairness. Their workmanship and attention to detail is outstanding. September 2019. This is my 6th project with Cottonwood. The principals, staff , and construction crews are top rate, prompt and well managed. The project is a large designer- stone paver patio with attending layout and sprinkler routing issues. I am very satisfied with the results. In my judgement this company is the best for major landscape enhancements and quality construction.
From the first visit to give a bid, to when the entire project was completed, the entire team was very professional. They started our project two days early and completed it ahead of schedule. Very impressed with how they made sure that everything was clean at the end of each day. We have a pretty decent slope in our backyard that we were unsure how to it make work for us. Dan helped us visualize what it could look like with a couple retaining walls in some key spots, some added trees and shrubs, and couple garden boxes. Now that our backyard is completed, it looks better than we thought it would. We are very excited for next spring and summer. Dan, Nate, Benito, and Crew. Thank you!
Im very happy with my yard!
Love these guys
Very professional!
Prompt, professional and completed as promised, what else can I say? Ill use them again!
Great team came in and made my project work when others could not. Nate and the rest of the crew were very respectful and always went above and beyond. Thanks.
Were professional and did a great job on our backyard pavers fire pit and trees
They did an excellent Job and replaced some of the plants that didnt make it. They have a year guarantee on their plantings and they more than honored the guarantee by giving us some extra plants.
Over the past 15 years, Cottonwood Landscapes has done three projects for us. They redesigned and re-landscaped the backyard of a house we purchased, did another complete landscape of a house we later built and most recently did a some significant further improvements of some landscape features we wanted to add. Their strength is design and hardscape-- the design and build of patios, rock and stacked stone walls, have been beautiful. Dan Cloward, the owner, gives careful, well thought out plans. He took into consideration my ideas/wants. He definitely thinks out of the box. For example, the original build of our current home, because it was built into a steep hillside, did not allow for access to the backyard from our driveway which, for us, was not acceptable. When other landscapers said it couldnt be done, Cottonwood Landscapes owner, Dan, made a design plan that completely excavated that area behind the house that included the arranging and safely re-routing/reburying of the (huge!) main electrical line to our property, and then subsequently built beautiful stone stairs with a stone pathway into our backyard from the driveway. In addition to all of the above, they have built us a lovely gas-line fire-pit with surrounding seating, a water feature, complete irrigation systems, fences, very sturdy and well built small buildings (sheds) and a beautiful custom potting bench---in addition to the rock walls, patio, pathways and features I have already mentioned. Dan has integrity--- he has started and finished projects for us when he says he will. His crews have been a pleasure to work with. Ive been very impressed that despite all these years, I have seen the same people on his crews. His prices are fair-- though not the least expensive, hes not the most expensive. He ensures that any punch-list at the end of the project gets promptly taken care of. In summary, if you need to move some earth, build something special for your home and have it done by a company you can trust to complete the project, these guys are it.
Cottonwood Landscapes landscaped our 30 year old back and side yard and did a fantastic job. With an artistic eye, they created two retaining walls out of large boulders, rock steps, a paver and a gravel pathway, a fire pit, lighting, new sprinklers, new grass, and many plantings. Dan, Nate, and Armenio were extremely responsive and positive to deal with when issues came up. They really have the resources, expertise, and man power to get a big job done. They were on schedule and communicated all costs, which were fair. When we ran into unexpected problems - they always had solutions. They will be our go to landscaping company if we do more.
Ive worked with these guys for years now. Dan helped us create the concept for replacing our back yard. We ended up replacing 3/4 of our yard. Nate wrangled the troops to get it done. Ive had them back multiple times for various projects.
The end result of our landscaping and retaining walls is outstanding. They are especially good at paver sones and retaining walls. It required a fair amount of calls and follow up to get plants and trees that did not make the first year, but all were replaced and now growing and looking great. I would definitely have them do more work for me and recommend to friends.
Did not build my patio the way I specified. Were not responsive when I asked them to fix a sprinkler pipe they broke. Overpriced.
Over the last ten years, I have used this folks for three different jobs on my residential property, and each time they have been wonderful to work with. their work is beautiful and durable.
We needed our patio extended and asked Cottonwood to bid on tearing down our existing concrete and adding the new. Unfortunately, and to no fault of Cottonwood Landscapes, we were held back a year and a half from the time that we received their bid until our HOA would approve the project. During that time, Cottonwood was instrumental in guiding us through approval with our HOA, and expertly shifted our project on their schedule to accommodate us. When we were finally approved the crew were timely and professional, careful to follow our strict noise ordinances, and finished with a beautiful patio just like we had described. We are happy to recommend Cottonwood Landscapes as a service that offers attention to detail, professionalism, and commitment to getting the job done and done right.
Dan, Sue and I would like to thank you for the beautiful backyard project you did for us last fall. The willingness to work with us on the design and budget went above and beyond. Your landscapers were all courteous, hard working, and very professional. It was nice to see that they took pride in their work and their workspace. We are looking forward to many enjoyable years in our new backyard. We look forward to working with you on our next project. Thank You, Kurt and Sue Urses
Friendly and quality service. They provided a full design and we picked the elements we wanted them to complete. My only tip for others is to be very precise in what portions youre asking them to execute. There were a few edgings and stones we had assumed would be included are werent. Were very happy and would use them again.
I would recommend this company to any and everyone! I have never had the pleasure of working with a better company. They were timely, professional, very high quality work. Communication was excellent. Nate made several suggestions that were awesome and complimented the original design concept. They never hesitated to implement changes that we requested. They were polite, cleaned up after themselves every evening, professional. Armenio and his crew are AMAZING!!!! We will be using this company again in the future for sure!
Dan & Nate We would like to express our thanks for the professional job that Cottonwood Landscapes LLC did on our backyard. It was a big project that included a rock wall at the back, the fencing let alone the beautiful design of the landscaping around the fencing. The biggest project was all the design and work that went into putting in the pool, fire pit and outdoor kitchen. We want to extend our thanks for the extra effort your company put into finishing the pool so our daughter Nannette could see it completed. It was her idea to finish the backyard and put in the pool. She died of cancer the day the pool was completed. The project was slated to be finished by September and was finished by July. Your company did not take any shortcuts in the quality of workmanship to accomplish the job. We now have a gorgeous backyard and pool. We would and have recommended your company to the people we have been in contact with. Rex & Linda Briscoe & Alan Ford
Cottonwood Landscapes did an amazing job in my yard. They take the necessary steps to do a quality job and also completing a beautiful project. I highly recommend them to anyone! I talked to several other landscapers and none of them seemed to hit the mark for what I was looking for.
Project took 6 days longer than they estimated. I had to remind them of projects they forgot to do. Job looked great when finished but left us with some problems. Couldnt get ahold of anyone to come and fix these issues and was eventually ignored to the point of us giving up. I wouldnt recommend them because once the job is done, you are forgotten, even if you need fixes.
Two words: Exceeded Expectations! Cottonwood Landscapes finished our front and back yards this summer and exceeded our expectations in every way. From the design to completion of the project, I was constantly impressed at their responsiveness, work ethic, and professionalism. We had a nightmare of a project left from our home contractor and the city. We contacted over one dozen other contractors to bid the project, but Cottonwood (specifically Dan Cloward) was the only one who came up with realistic, practical ideas on how to transform our unusable yard into a beautiful oasis for entertaining guests and spending time as a family. We were provided with drawings, scope of work, and pricing within a few days. We were given a start date and duration for the project, which they met perfectly. From day one the workers were there at 7:00 AM sharp, working through the day until usually 7:00 PM. I never had to call and question whether they were going to show up or not, which is very rare in the contractor market. The landscaping played out like symphony, everything coming together quickly, at just the right time to complete one beautiful project. We had everything done, from the retaining walls, grading, stone stairs, garden, trees, in-ground trampoline, grass, sprinklers, edging, to the focal point in our back yard, the massive pergola, and gas fire pit. I have had all my neighbors and family comment on what a great job was done. We use our new, beautiful yard every day, whereas before, we never went in the back yard because it was a weedy, unusable dirt patch. I had a wonderful experience with, and would highly recommend Cottonwood Landscape to anyone.
Cottonwood Landscapes was fast, thorough, and had high quality work ethic. We built a new house and needed retaining walls, sprinkling system, and landscaping advice. Cottonwood was professional and knowledgeable. Several of our neighbors all needed landscaping services as well and they all decided to go the cheap route and hire low quality workers, and they all ended up paying for it. Were the only ones who havent had to rip out horrible concrete jobs and low quality sprinkling systems. Our grass stayed green because we got awesome coverage while our neighbors all struggled with dry spots and lumpy yards. You get what you pay for, and Cottonwood delivers landscaping that looks great and functions properly. They are also quick to return calls and address questions. Highly recommend to anyone that wants the job done right the first time.
I can highly recommend Cottonwood Landscapes for both design and implementation of landscape work. They did a very large job for us, i.e. backyard pool, pool house, landscape plantings, pavers, sprinkling design and installation. Everything was well planned and timed and very little was not on schedule. Their installation and design teams were great to work with andthey made a lot of great recommendations along the way.
I selected Cottonwood Landscapes after having watched them work in my neighborhood and I am very glad I did. I have recommended them to all my friends and neighbors. From the initial estimate, I knew they were complete professionals as they talked about all aspects of the work- permits, removal, installation, etc. (None of the other estimates I received included the details they discussed) They really instilled confidence in me that they would do a first class job and I was not disappointed. They provided detailed designs for my work and suggested improvements that I had not considered. Their work quality was superb, the crew were always courteous, and the crew leader was always available to explain the status of what was going on. Each evening they cleaned up the debris along the street leaving the worksite as clean as possible to reduce the adverse effects on my neighbors. They installed 2 terraces supported by block walls 90 ft long and 5-6 feet tall, a block patio and walkway, a rock retaining wall and a sprinkler system. All county inspections were conducted on a routine basis further instilling confidence in the quality and workmanship. It is everything we had hoped for. If you want your work done right, Cottonwood Landscapes is for you!
We were thoroughly impressed with Cottonwood Landscapes and the work they completed in our yard. Not only did they help us design the backyard of our dreams, they helped us enhance every aspect of our homes landscape. Most importantly they came in ON BUDGET which is very important to us. They worked with us personally to create a yard custom to our wants and perfect for our family. We always thought that finishing our yard would take a lot of time and energy, but working with Cottonwood made the whole process simple and smooth. Our yard was finished in record time! Each employee treated our yard with respect and again, we were so pleased with how quick everyone worked. On one occasion we were meeting with the owner and he looked at one of the trees they had just planted the day before and told his site foreman that they needed to dig it up and turn it a quarter turn so that it would look the best from my patio. We hadnt noticed the issue with the tree and probably never would have but we loved the fact that they were so detail oriented. Their expert knowledge left us feeling confident in our decisions and we know we received a quality product. We would definitely recommend Cottonwood Landscapes to anyone that wants quality work, expert advice and a company that goes above and beyond expectations.
Cottonwood Landscape landscaped our front yard. They put in a brick walkway, updated sprinklers, design and landscaped front yard. We were very pleased with their work ethic, timeliness, and the work group was very personable.
New to Utah bought new home did not know anyone, got several bids did not go with the least expense but went with Cottonwood Landscaping because of their knowledge and what we experienced the value that they gave us and they stood behind their work and products. We are very happy and would highly encourage anyone else that reads this to do the same.
We worked with Dan at Cottonwood Landscapes starting May2015 through October2015. As the owner of Cottonwood Landscapes, Dan came up himself & did the bid. He was overly friendly during this meeting & his bid came in at the best price! Our yard was a bit tricky because the back yard is a hill that slopes in to our home, so our goal was to ensure that all moisture would drain away from our house. Dan ensured us that this would be an easy issue to tackle. We ended up paying $6,000 over what his initial bid came in at! He left permit costs out of the bid claiming he did not know permits would be necessary. Dan never did his due diligence to find out if permits were needed. So when it came to the permits it was entirely up to me to secure them. I spent over 6 hours at the city figuring out what documentation I needed & who I needed to meet with in order to secure these permits. I had to measure out the walkway entirely by myself & draw up a diagram showing the city where the walkway would be in regards to the waterline. I ended up having to go to 2 DRT meetings because during the first meeting I did not have what I needed. I am not a landscape expert so of course I wasnt aware of all the documentation required. I had to get blueprints of the walkway plan from Dans architect to present to the city & after all that work I did by myself at the city building I ended up having to pay Dan for the work of the architect. Please keep in mind I asked the architect to meet me at the meeting and he showed up 20 minutes late & missed the whole thing, but Dan charged me for his time anyway. Dan also didnt include the cost to move dirt, which is strange since our main concern was moving dirt so that moisture would not run in to our home, he claimed we opted out of dirt removal? & when it came to our patio Dans plans only included 2 walls instead of the 3 it needed for completion. Dan completely left out the 3rd wall so we had an entire wall of dirt falling into our patio since the paver stones were not stacked up in a wall formation as they had been on the other 2 sides. Dan also did not include the Rainbird sprinkler control dial in the bid. He included a sprinkling system yet charged us an extra $300 to put in a dial so that we could actually turn the sprinklers on. You would think the dial would be included in the sprinkler system but it isnt. He also apparently found the cheapest concrete company to work with for our front walkway. they dug the walkway out 6 inches too close to a fire hydrant, which required them to come back & do the job twice, while leaving excess dirt for us to deal with. While pouring the patio they damaged our driveway & we had to fight to get them to come back & correct the issue. They also completely over poured the walkway leaving edges that were not smooth, but instead had piles of hard cement connected to it. The concrete company also hid mounds of of extra cement underneath dirt in our front yard, which we found while shoveling ....Trying to remove the dirt that Dan didnt include in his contract. Another strange thing about working w/ Dan is every time I would write him a check i would make it out to Cottonwood Landscapes. Every time Dan would send these checks back requesting that I make them out to him personally, Dan Cloward. The only explanation I can think of for this is he was hiding income from the government or from his employees. In his contract, Dan promised that our project would be substantially completed within 2 weeks from the start date. The start date was supposed to be July 24. Dan missed the start date by a week & our project did not get finished until October. You can do the math! Dan seemed like such a nice guy when we first met him, but Dan became unresponsive after we signed w/ him. The only time he answered my calls was when I called him blocked, even though I called him unblocked seconds before. Do yourself a favor go with someone who seems a bit more expensive who will get the job done correctly and on time. It will save you time & $!
We worked with Dan at Cottonwood Landscapes on landscaping design and lighting for both the front and back yards. The bid was clear, concise and accurate as to costs and timing. They completed the work on schedule and we have enjoyed the finished product now for several years and have received many good complements about the design and the layout. It was a pleasure to work with Dan and Cottonwood. I have always found him to be responsive to our needs since that time. We would recommend Cottonwood Landscapes to anyone looking for help with their landscape and lighting needs. Mike A
We had railroad ties everywhere as retaining walls. They were looking very sad when we asked Dan for a bid. Dan came right over and walked the yard with us. We discussed different options to replace the railroad ties and he recommended a product we liked. We need to see and touch before we decide and Dan was nice enough to meet us at his shop so we could see the different products. The retaining wall crew was very professional and on time each day. They even accommodated a change in the design on one wall. The first set of blocks were spotted and they picked out the ones that would work and ordered new ones. There were 3 separate retaining walls they worked on and we have had numerous compliments on how they look now. We also had an existing pond that leaked and was dark and closed in around it. It also had railroad ties around the outside area and down the edge of the property. These railroad ties ended with granite rocks as the border. Dan suggested we replace these railroad ties with granite rocks to continue the theme and also put in a small patio on the south side. They gave us an initial view of what the pond would look like, smaller with a raised waterfall. We loved what they proposed but when the pond whisperer arrived he suggested something, still within the quoted amount, that we loved even more. This opened the pond and provided a double waterfall. They even find the driftwood to add to make it more natural looking. We love our pond and cant wait for spring to start it up again. They make suggestions along the way that improved the looks and feel of our pond. The patio they laid adds to that area and was laid around an existing fire pit. It looks wonderful! Each crew was courteous and on time and they cleaned up beautifully when they were done, even power washing our driveway. I would recommend Cottonwood Landscapes enthusiastically. The work was completed within the time frame stated in the contract.
Re-landscaped the front yard of a house I own. This was my parents old house and the yard was not in bad shape, but I wanted it to look really nice in their memory and to honor them. My father always kept up the yard very well. This included pavers on a front porch, some lawn, planting trees preparing beds and planting lots of perennials and sprinkler system repairs. I was overseas when the job was done and was sent pictures when completed. I was shocked when Isaw the pictures. After $15000 the yard looked worse than before. Many of the plants were in poor shape and very dried out, some dead and dying. The trees planted were mere sticks of one-half inch diameter. No mulch was used. When I complained about this not being included in the bid I was told it was not standard practice and I would need to shell out another $500 for mulch. I believe this was dishonest method of creating add-ons and mulch certainly is a standard practice in any landscaping. The plant selection and design was poor. There was no follow-up after the job was completed to ensure sprinklers were well adjusted. The company has been pretty unresponsive in the year since and many emails have been unanswered or involved repeated attempts to get a response. The beds were not well prepared and the following spring the beds are all completely choked by weeds and lawn grass that was not thoroughly removed.
A lawsuit threat after less than 30 days after service was rendered in the first email sent. full email he sent me was: > We sent you a bill for work performed. You were yo pay us when you received > the bill. We have not received a check. We have called numerous times with > no call back. If we do not hear from you by the end of the week or receive a > check we will assume you have chosen not to pay the bill and turn it over to > our attorney. I hope we can speak sooner then that. Thanks, > > Dan Cloward > > Sent from my iPhone > No payment terms were discussed prior to work done, no due date or remit payment date posted on bill. was professional up front but any business that threatens to send lawyers in first contact email is disconcerting. In addition 2 days prior to receiving the email I had mailed the payment USPS.
