We began working with Merrifield on a landscape rebuild for our front and backyard about 2 years ago, as our yard needed a serious overhaul to make it manageable and cohesive. The grounds were overplanted and overgrown with a hodgepodge of plants. It was so overwhelming that we just couldn’t keep it up. Jamie T is an amazing designer who worked with us to capture our needs and wants. He delivered a full plan that showed us how amazing our yard could look while making it lower maintenance, well thought out for now and future growth. And we were pleasantly surprised when he went through all our existing plants and tried to keep as many as possible. He was also very patient and supportive; as this new vision led us to add on additional projects: driveway and walkway redo, irrigation install. Jamie was there to tie it all together for us. The install team couldn’t have been better: friendly, knowledgeable, and so dedicated to making the plantings thrive. We really enjoyed talking to them as they shared suggestions and tips for the grounds. You can tell they love what they do. We ended up completing the front yard this year, with the backyard to go in 2024. And we’re hoping to get the same install team, although we sure the entire team at Merrifield is just as amazing!

Alex Knott designed and oversaw the installation our new flowers. Her crew had to rip out a large number of ground cover roses and weeds, including poison ivy, which was a messy project. The crew came on time and went to work and did the entire job in a day, which included planting 20 plants and shrubs. They were a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend Alex

Alex K. is a true gem, with a keen eye for the unusual and a design sensibility that celebrates texture, form, color, and function. Katie and Julian were a pleasure to welcome into the garden and made installation smooth and sweet. Merrifield takes the time to source healthy, robust shrubs and trees that settle in beautifully.

I could not be more pleased with the service and professionalism of Merrifield Garden & Design. The crew were extremely pleasant. They arrived on time and left the site clean and organized upon leaving. Alex was the lead designer, and she designed a lovely space according to my style. She suggested I create a Pinterest page with the design style and plants that I like and incorporated my concerns into the design, such as plants that are ground hog, rabbit and deer resistant. She and the team took meticulous care in selecting, placing and pruning the trees and shrubs in our area (both new and old). Alex made herself available to answer all questions pertaining to the new plants such as watering requirements, fertilizing, pruning, etc. She also provided guidance on areas of the lawn in which we did not contract them to do, which was awesome. I highly recommend Merrifield without reservation and look forward to using them in the future.

Merrifield exceeded my expectations. Excellent communications right from the start, great quality plants, super reliable, and a pleasure to work with. Katie J was so helpful with the pre-planning/recommendations, and she and Nils did an amazing job pruning, removing, and planting trees and shrubs as if it were their own garden. They were available to answer questions and explain their process. I've used Merrifield a number of times and look forward to using them again. I've hired other companies prior to Merrifield, and they have not nearly compared to the fantastic experience I had with Merrifield Garden and Design.

Twenty-five years ago, I hired a landscape designer to create and implement my Japanese garden. Due to a substantial amount of work on the exterior of my house within the past two years, however, large portions of the garden were destroyed. As such, my requirements are a bit out of the ordinary; I needed a firm to provide me with advice as to how to repair my garden and, ideally, take it to the next level. I am very pleased to say that I found the individual I was looking for in Alex, Merrifield’s Landscape Designer/Project Manager. First, Alex instructed me to have my soil tested. After receiving the results back from the lab, she helped me determined the products I would need to purchase to remediate the soil. Next, she advised me to hire a landscaper to spread compost throughout the garden, which will take place in one month. For the final phase of the project, Alex provided me with a list of 42 perennials, shrubs, and trees for my consideration. Rather than handing over the design to her, however, I wanted to take a more active approach, visiting a nursery to decide for myself which plants to include. Once I have made that determination, I will provide Alex with a draft design, which we will refine until we arrive at the final design. I realize that this approach is a bit unorthodox, but it is precisely the approach I have been seeking. I am extremely grateful to have found a firm willing to work with me on my terms.
