I just felt the need to write this and I barely ever write reviews. I am a very particular and difficult customer. We had a front and back patio along with a side walkway installed. It was not an easy or clean job. But, every single time there was an issue or I had a question, Don answered it and tried to make it better; even after payment was given. He and his team did a great job. I would definitely hire them again without hesitation. Thank you Don!

In Don Thurber, I finally found someone who could solve the problem of a massive and high dry stack stone wall buikt in 1940 that had exploded in my backyard 34 years ago, and been an overgrown eyesore ever since. Others had advised it would take hundreds of thousands of dollars, require massive equipment, and could be replaced only by something brute or artificial looking. Not only was Don Thurber able to use all of the stone that had been piled up for decades and hidden in the remains of the landslide, he recut it and blended it in with new stone so that the resultant terraces looked like extensions of the original wall, Furthermore, everything was excavated by hand. No dump trucks or bulldozers. Then, his crew of amazingly talented master stonemasons spent 5 weeks executing a beautiful set of terraces of his own design. The result is nothing short of magnificent. Focusing on the aesthetic, he also created and installed a drainage system into each terrace to address the hydrostatic problem that had led to the collapse of the hill originally. Plus, he added lighting that I never would have thought to include. In other words, Silver Spring Landscaping exceeded all of my expectations. If you have a major project, and are willing to spend the funds necessary for a quality product, you have found the right person for the job. I really never thought I would, and am so glad I did.

Silver Spring Landscaping recently created a new patio for us to replace an old flagstone patio that was improperly sloping towards the house. The new patio, made of concrete pavers, is beautiful. The work was completed quickly and on time. Don is very knowledgeable about landscaping and land shaping, and his workers are well organized, very efficient, and very nice. We needed a steeper grade in our back yard for those rare occasions when rain falls hard and threatens to back up into our basement. They accomplished this in one day.

From Eyesore to Showpiece We engaged Silver Spring Landscaping to renovate/refresh our front and side yard landscaping, and couldnt be happier we did! Warning to readers, if you prefer one-sentence reviews then stop reading now because the pervious sentence says it all. If youre still reading then here are additional details.... Don Thurber is the owner and he quickly responded to our initial inquiry - believe me, many landscapers dont even bother to reply which makes no business sense to me - and came out to walk the property, talk with us to understand what we wanted, etc. He said hed get a proposal to us by the end of the week, and he made good on that promise, including breaking it out in pieces in case we decided to piecemeal the work instead of doing it all at once. His pricing is fair and it turns out you really do get what you pay for. And by the way, Don didnt pester us after delivering the proposal like some service providers do, which we appreciated (we despise being hounded and pressured). Dons crew clearly knew what they were doing, and they seemed to be familiar with each others work styles, who was doing what, etc, including the supervisors Henry and William. In other words, Don doesnt pick up random day laborers at the entrance to Home Depot every morning and dump them on a project site, like some landscapers do. The crew was on time or early every day during the 8-day project. They were friendly and courteous when we would come and go, and even did little things like putting our morning paper near our mailbox so it wouldnt get run over by their trucks. Although there was a Bobcat onsite that was used when necessary, the vast majority of the work was done using wheelbarrows. Some landscapers use trucks, dingles, and other motorized equipment almost exclusively. This sounds like a small thing but its not: The crew cleaned up at the end of each workday. Weve had crews here, landscaping and asphalt, who left each day with our property looking like a landfill or dump. Dons crew shows professional respect by cleaning up each day. Don was happy to repurpose old plants and take away old unwanted plants, as well as make recommendations for upgrades to plantings and infrastructure. Don was onsite at least a part of each day of the project, so hes a hands-on owner who means what he says about quality of work, customer satisfaction, etc. We were also freely given tips and advice on how to handle various things, including post-project lawn and shrub care that would involve other contractors/companies. We were impressed when the crew was cleaning up at the end of the last day of this project, and they were getting ready to power wash the driveway but they seemed to have trouble getting their compressor started. So instead, one of them used a garden hose to spray water on the driveway, and a second crewmember came along behind with a leaf blower, essentially creating a do-it-yourself power washer. There were several bakers dozen experiences where we got a pleasant surprise or no-charge upgrade. I wont list them here because I dont want future customers of Dons to expect or demand them. But unexpected little delights add to the overall positive feeling about the project and the contractor. Don provided a port-o-pot for the crew, which we think showed professionalism, class, and caring for his crew. Dont laugh, its the first time weve ever experienced that, because most contractors leave the crew to fend for themselves, and of course over the years they typically would go into the nearby woods. The only negative we can think of has nothing to do with the quality of the work/materials, but is probably what many small businesses do: If we wanted to pay by credit card, the 3% service fee would be added to the price of the proposal. So no credit-card points, not a biggee. Bottom line: If you want work done on your personal property or work location, you owe it to yourself to talk with Don. Youll be glad you did.

Don was very thorough in his assessment of the job based on our requests, and was thoughtful in his recommendations. He went above and beyond in his service. We ll be using this company for our future projects, for sure!

Silver Spring Landscaping is an outstanding company managed by the wonderful owner Don Thurber. They have transformed the front area of our property from a boring circular driveway, and wasted easement area through which cars would race in without regard to the fact that it is our private property. Don worked painstakingly with us to design a practical and affordable project, addressing each aspect. We now have a beautiful front garden to sit in; a rock garden and footpath in the easement area (for which we gained extra appreciation from our neighbors); a beautiful paved parking area and path up to our front door; two pillars and a paved arc joining them to signal to people using the easement that this is someones private home; and magical lighting which gives warmth and beauty in the evenings, especially the long winter ones. Don stands by his work and customers even after the project is finished. Several plants died, as is likely to happen with such a big project. Don has come by to assess the problem and will be replacing these. We are so grateful to have found him and his company. Their work is bringing us the great joy of enjoying nature.

If you are looking for a reliable, response, reasonably priced landscaping company that stands by their work, Don and Silver Spring Landscaping are NOT the solution. I had Don to large project for me. While his prices were higher than other quotes, his reviews were positive enough that I went forward. Since then, there have been issues that needed to be corrected. Trying to get a hold of him to fix anything incredibly difficult. Eventually I did get a hold of him, and he has wanted to charge me to fix the issues that he created. I protested and now he has stopped responding to emails and phone calls. I suspect many of his reviews on Google are friends or shills. Fortunately, I have found better more customer-oriented landscaping companies around the Montgomery County area that do not overcharge and are much more responsive.

So lucky to have found Don and Silver Spring landscaping! We had so many problems with our lawn and it was in terrible shape. Don and his team built a beautiful patio with a double retaining wall in our backyard. Our backyard had a steep slope towards the back and we already built a deck on one side of the back yard. Don and his crew built a beautiful patio with a double retaining wall adjacent to the deck and also a retaining wall around the deck after levelling it. They also planted shrubs/plants in between the retaining walls and at the back of the patio and added river rock underneath the deck. These were totally Dons ideas and we are glad we listened to him. In the end, our backyard looks beautiful. We also added a paver walkway from the front of the house to the backyard patio making this project somewhat complete. Don and his crew are true professionals, work did not stop until it was completed. Don was at the site every day and available to clear all our doubts/concerns. The quote for the project was fair, may be a bit cheaper than the quotes we received from others. Most importantly, we went with Don because of the great positive reviews he received and for his ideas/suggestions to make sure the final product looks beautiful. If we have another project or my family member is doing a landscaping/patio project, Silver Spring Landscaping/Don will be the first we call.

After interviewing several different contractors for a very involved grating job, I picked Silver Spring Lsndscaping. The job Don and his crew did was absolutely top notch! Having heard from friends and neighbors about Silver Spring Landscaping s excellent drainage work, we called on Don for help--and we are very glad we did. He designed a system of French drains and swails that his crew installed in a little over a week. They also planted a beautiful garden in a previously wet section of the yard that I had simply abandoned, and added tasteful, low-voltage night lighting to the backyard. These guys demoed the porch we had, took down 4 trees, and built us a beautiful back patio and garden. They Quoted us a single price at the beginning and ended up enlarging the patio, adding more plants and cutting down extra trees without changing the base price. They even added an extra step down to the fire ring without charge. The only price change was because my wife wanted very specific plants which were more expensive, which he ended up throwing in one we decided was to expensive for free. The owner was constantly checking up on the project, and making sure everything went smoothly. This is a company I would whole heatedly support and trust for my next job.

Don and his crew just did a fantastic job with a major landscaping project in our back yard. Our yard sloped steeply toward the back, and was previously wooded. We took down some trees to make a clearing a year ago. Working from my concept, Don graded a level area in the lawn, and built a retaining wall on the upper side of the lawn area. He sloped the lower end of the lawn to meet the original grade at the back of the lawn. Other landscaping companies either balked at the job, or gave estimates that were multiples of what we ended up paying. We did end up adding to the original job price, when the grading did not produce a large enough level area. But I feel the additional cost of enlarging the lawn area was well worth it, and was done at reasonable cost. As the project progressed, we decided to go with the lighting option, and then we added plantings, and some maintenance of existing stone work. They reconstructed stepper pathways with existing stones, and did a lot that integrated the new work with some existing features. The final result is truly amazing. I did not even imagine the yard would look this good, when we started the project! Don was there every day to start the crew off, and was very responsive to communications. Ive dealt with other companies where the sales representative gets you hooked because you like them, but then never shows up to your job again. Not with these guys. Also, Silver Spring Landscaping was less expensive than the other companies, because Don and we, were both willing to work with a concept and design the retaining wall pretty much by sight. I drew a concept by hand to show him what we were thinking, and when it came time to start the wall, he set down some flags to show where it would be, and we agreed from that. So there were no landscape architects involved, no drawings. This has to reduce the cost tremendously over those companies that only work from architectural drawings. But the final result looks like it came from landscape architects. As a final note, our neighbors commented on how thoroughly the crew cleaned up the street at the front of our house, where they had been loading dirt and mulch. They were impressed that the crew power washed the street!

These folks did a extensive work to fix drainage problems in my yard. They fixed grading problems, installed french drains, rerouted waterflow from three separate downspouts to an appropriate area and removed all blockages that were causing my backyard to become a lake (and to leak into my basement). They did the work they said they would do, when they said they would do it, and finished when they said they would. My yard also looks 100% better than when they started. This is a great company to call!!!!

I hired Silver Spring Landscaping to address a drainage and grading issue I had at the back of my house, which is at the bottom of a long hill. Dons team installed a comprehensive outdoor french drain system and even repaired a broken downspout drain they discovered while excavating at no extra charge. Dons crew dug through difficult soil with thick roots and managed to avoid damaging my neighbors brand new plantings. The final result was nicely finished and integrates well into our existing landscaping. I have had several bad experiences with cheap professionals and appreciated Dons expertise and site management through the job. We hired Don to clear out our overgrown and flood-prone backyard, then regrade it and turf the whole thing. He put in a rock swale to channel the water away, laid a new concrete sidewalk, and installed French drains. We are very pleased with the quality, timeliness, and professionalism of the work. We hired Don to put in a flagstone patio and we couldnt be happier. As a former landscaper I worried I wouldnt be satisfied with anyone elses work but when they showed up with flagstones the size of the hood of my car, I knew wed picked the right guys. The entire project took less than a week and the plantings he help us choose look great. Looking forward to having them back when we start our next project.

We hired them to fix drainage problems in my yard, leading to water in parts of the basement. They fixed the grading, installed French drains, rerouted waterflow from the downspouts and put in two window wells. Despite this, we still had a little bit of a water problem in the front corner. Don added another small French drain in the front corner at no additional charge, saying that he just wanted to make it right. We have had no problems since then. They did all the work in one day (and one additional day later on for the additional French Drain), and the yard looks terrific. I would use them again in a second!

I did an extensive research on retaining walls construction and landscaping garden design before choosing Dons company. Some other companies might seem to be less expensive but do not have the solid knowledge and experience as what Don has. Also some other companies might seem to be more expensive but do not seem to know this field as good as Don. What we were looking for is a company that really knows the business and also has extensive experience on both stone construction and gardening. It is hard to find because most companies are either this or that but not both. Luckily we had Don help building beautiful retaining walls, planting beds, and a dry river bed (Japanese pebble garden) last month. We were very pleased by the work of his professional team. After that, Don helped planting beautiful trees, sodding, and gardening few days ago. Before, during, and after the projects, we had a lot of discussions with Don. We told him our ideas, and he gave us his professional advice. If you are planning to do some projects similar to ours (stone walls, patios, and gardens), look no further because I have done much more research than you possibly thought. Reasons: 1. I dont want to pay for people to learn to do these projects (which means cheap works are out of consideration.), and 2. I dont want to pay stiff price for companies that charge unreasonable price (which means pricing needs to be reasonable and with highest quality professional works). With that said, our next phase of stone gardens will still need Dons help. We are glad to have him helping us.

The result was far, far more beautiful and site-specific than we could have hoped for. It looks perfect for a challenging site, and looks like it has belonged here forever. The crew was terrific, worked very hard and left the place immaculate. We will call on Don for a few more projects next year, but in the meantime recommend the company with great enthusiasm. He is a considerate and thoughtful professional His guys are an absolute joy to have around. Since we stumbled across his company circa 2009, we have used him and his team for three large jobs, each of which have gone smoothly and have been worth whatever we paid. In one job, he built a wonderful stone patio, another rebuilt our driveway and large retaining walls, then most recently replaced our delapidated and crumbling front steps and front stoop. The walls were so well crafted that may neighbors couldnt help but watch the Silver Spring Landscaping team in action - and as a former landscape engineer she was very impressed with their work! Great job, Don and staff! Don beautifully finished a section of our yard that was in sever disarray. They cleaned it up and planted a variety of new plants. Cleaned up the dry river bed which never looked so good. All in all a fabulous job . . .and the best part was that, since I was really busy at that time, I didnt have time to be too involved. We were so pleased to work with Silver Spring Landscaping. Of the estimates we requested, they were the most responsive. Don had by far the most elegant and comprehensive plan to fix the drainage issues on our property. Polite, punctual, and professional, they got to work quickly. Not only did their crew carefully re-grade, we also had them install a new brick patio and rebuild our flagstone walkway. All of the work done was absolutely top notch. Throughout the process, Don personally oversaw the work site and was great about communicating with us. We are highly satisfied with their work and wont hesitate to give them a call in the future.

Silver Spring Landscaping designed and created a beautiful garden and walkway which flows into my backyard landscape. Don Thurber and his crew transformed an area that was filled with dirt and bland pebbles into a serpentine path that belongs in a fairy tale. A stone boulder walkway adorned by ferns, creeping jenny and other plants; in shades of green, chartreuse and violet, provides an inviting and imaginative entranceway which always brings a smile to my face when I see it!
