We had recently moved into our San diego house from the east coast...the backyard was all concrete and we needed ideas for both layout/design and plant selection. Tried john based on google reviews and have been very pleased with the experience and result. We chose his lower cost "sketch" option, and we enjoyed meeting with him and the iterative ideas/sketch/modifications process. Once we settled on a design, John (at my request) recommended a few contractors; the one we selected worked out well. John stayed involved throughout the project implementation and even provided some CAD drawings for step-stone placements at no charge.
John was very professional and took the time to go through his process of designing what we wanted and what would work for our front area. He researched the neighborhood to see what worked and would flourish with our soil, and made many suggestions for plants and flowers. He was able to refer us to many different landscape companies until we were able to find the right one. John also made sure to oversee the installation of the plants when they arrived onsite. We will definitely contact John for our backyard in the future. I highly recommend Infinite Sky Landscape Design!

Great designer to work with. We wanted to update our new houses backyard with a new patio, new planters, and new retaining walls. We knew we wanted to get a landscape designer so that we could have a specific, concrete plan for contractors to bid on. Reached out to a few different local designers but only John was upfront, communicative and open about timelines and his working process. John put a lot of detail into looking at and measuring our property, and provided us with several well-thought out potential plans for a new backyard. After a session or two to go over the potential plans, we were able to select and refine not only a design plan but an itemized list of estimated costs for the work that we could use to evaluate contractor bids. He also put us in contact with several different contractors, making the contractor research process easy for us. Our backyard construction is currently ongoing but we have great peace of mind knowing that we and the contractors are on exactly the same page thanks to Johns detailed designs and notes. Definitely recommend you reach out and secure a design if youre thinking about a large backyard project!
John is a great desinger with fantastic communication, artisitc, and design skills. He is very aware of how the plants will grow over time and how to properly place them to ensure the design looks good as the yard matures. John listened to what we wanted then mended that with his ideas as well as what would be most functional for property. Hes very easy to work with and I highly reccomend using him for your landscape design needs!
After contacting several designers, we hired John to do his same-day sketch service, as all of our landscaping needed to be replaced. All in our case is not a whole lot. We have a very small lot, so CAD drawings seemed overkill. We really left all of the design / plant selection up to John, as we dont have any knowledge of the subject or eye for such things. John did a great job, not only designing our landscaping, but recommending installers and guiding us through the whole process. I would recommend John whole-heartedly.
We had a large landscaping project that we wanted professional help with, and chose John to do the design. We worked through his three-step process, which worked out very well. We were concerned that we would have to use the drawings as is through the process, but John was incredibly accommodating making sure that we were happy with each of the drawing through each of the phases and more than willing to make changes well before the final drawings. I believe weve ended up in a very good place! John is very professional, easy to communicate with, has great ideas, and ultimately delivers a great product! I would highly recommend John if you are considering a large or small landscaping project. I think youll be very happy!

Helps visualize options and finished product - able to take design sketch, suggested cost range, and seek bids with contractors for installation.

John is amazing! I have absolutely no creatitvity and no vision so I knew I had to get someone to help with the design of my front yard. All that I knew was that I wanted low maintenance and he put all of the peices together for me. I didnt know what to expect but when he created his layout and drawing I was blown away. He took so much time explaining to me what each plant, rock, tree, boulder, and paver were that I could actually picture the whole yard in my head with the help of his pictures of plants and design drawing.

I recently received my final design plan from John and am happy with the way it turned out. John was very enjoyable to work with which made discussing and planning the design something to look forward to rather than stress about. We had a lot of requests/concerns and John was great at listening to all and finding solutions/adding useful input on cost and feasibility. We were provided two initial designs which were both full of thoughtful touches and interesting flow. In the end we chose ideas from both designs and John created a final plan that met our wants and was closer to our budget with a detailed itemized list of work/expenses. He was able to include specific plants and design touches that we requested into the plan while still considering the flow and compatability of the space. We still havent started the actual work on getting the project done but John has already provided us with some recommendations for companies for materials that we were interested in as well as for labor. We look forward to providing an updated review/pictures once the project is complete. If youre looking for someone who listens well to your wants and has an eye for design, I think John is a great option for you.
The exterior of my house is a nightmare - pepper trees invading, overgrown bamboo, and weeds everywhere. I had planned on tearing everything out and leaving nothing but dirt and concrete. John changed all that. He truly has a unique vision for transforming an ugly landscape into a beautiful oasis. Working with my needs he created an outstanding plan to renovate this jungle. John provided a comprehensive list of tree and plant types, diagrams, cost estimates, and measurements of the entire outside of my home. He also gave me a list of contractors he trusts and the names of businesses where I can look at the types of materials Im interested in. I couldnt be happier with the results. Easy to talk to, great listener, and highly skilled, he made the entire process seem effortless. I cant recommend him enough.
Really enjoyed working with John on a new backyard design in Point Loma. We wanted a drought tolerant Japanese garden in place of an overgrown yard. John developed a beautiful plan that incorporated a cornucopia of color, texture, and function. He also itemized the potential cost of everything so we could pick and choose options to fit our budget. Hes very easy to work with and really knows his plants. His fees were on par with his level of experience and are paid progressively as the design is finalized

John Kensla is simply THE BEST! I had been wanting to overhaul my backyard for several years and was just unable to figure out what to do with it/what would look good. John came in and had a fabulous vision! He took the couple of ideas that I had and ran with it. I was blown away at just how perfect his design plans were! He had a good eye for design as well as an impressive knowledge of flowers and plants. The cost for plans was fantastic! John exceeded EVERY EXPECTATION that I had! One other thing that I wanted to point out was that I found John to be completely trust worthy and transparent. He explained how the whole process moving forward would work and even provided a shopping list of materials for me to provide to contractors so that I could ensure the contractors bids were properly priced. John made the process so EASY for me! I am so happy with his work. I recommend him to any and everyone. My only regret: I wish I would have called him years ago!
