Excellent Company - highly recommend! I've used Tode Landscaping for several major projects and could not be happier with the outcomes. The first project being an initial patio renovation which included a new firepit, and secondly a complete backyard transformation several years later which included new pool hardscaping, a new lawn, a variety of plantings, new surrounding trees & backyard lighting. In each case, designs were well thought out with great design considerations from Mike and his team. Tode Landscaping was fantastic to deal with, meticulous in design, with scheduled work delivered on time and in each case went above and beyond expectations to solve both prior workmanship and structural issues which they came across as they began their work. Projects were also completed within budget each and every time. I highly recommend Mike and his team for their amazing work and the outdoor experience they have given to our family.
Absolutely thrilled with the expertise, workmanship, and results. Far beyond our expectations. Continue to receive complement after complement from friends and neighbors. Our only disappointment is the maximum rating possible is limited to 10!
They built me a beautiful outdoor bar and back patio a few years ago, and then not long after did all of my landscaping in my front yard. True professionals who do amazing work. Their owner Mike Tode has an amazing eye and he really cares about the work his company does. Can’t say enough good things about this company. A+++++
Incredible high quality work. These guys deliver! If you need solid professional landscape design and build work done Tode is the right choice!
Update: Tode contacted us to set up a meeting to address our complaint on BBB and Google review .Unfortunately Mike Tode did not offer to compensate us for the damages his staff caused to our landscape. Basically continued to waste our time. Such a terrible experience. Wish we never hired them in the first place. HUGE mistake to contract with Tode Landscaping for a maintenance program last season. After we had spent a significant amount of money on an extensive lawn renovation which included new sod in our backyard we seeked a knowledgeable landscape maintenance co to take care of our beautiful new lawn &landscape. Reviews seemed good ,we met with Alan(acct mgr). Spring clean up was good. Howevver we noticed their crew scalped the grass edging around the beds. Looked very unprofessional. When brought to Alan's attention he blamed it on our mulch. 1st red flag. The truth was their weed wacker guy was very bad at this job. But that's nothing compared to what we saw happen on June 7th. During the middle of a heatwave on the hottest time of day their lawn chemical staff applied granular & weed spray chemicals that BURNED our entire lawn INCLUDING ALL OF OUR NEW SOD THAT WAS HEALTHY & GREEN PRIOR TO JUNE 7TH. We were sick to our stomachs when we saw how extensive all the yellow streaks of burn marks in the front yard and back yard. We contacted Alan &he told us to send pics &then told us it was probably fungus /cinch bug. Actually impossible to appear in one day we told him. It was obvious they had burned our grass from the chemicals the day before. Then he told us to go water it. Imagine, we were paying over $600/mo for their service. They obviously burned the grass and he told us to go water it with a garden hose.!! We contacted the owner Mike who came out a couple days later. In the meantime we had the grass diagnosis verified by 2 other companies that have a large lawn chemical care division. Confirmed. Chemical burn no question. Never put chemicals on your lawn during a heatwave. Especially new sod that doesn't even need anything. Mike Tode (who gets most of his information from Alan) didn't want to admit that his staff caused the damage but he came up with repairing the sod with tiny pieces of new sod in the beginning of July and said they would come to hand water it. We told him that was a bad idea that he needs to replace the sod in its entirety because that is the right way to do it. We made the next mistake by letting him do it his way. It became an even worse disaster with his idea. Nobody came to hand water. The owner nor Alan ever checked back on the progress of their repair. Their crew came weekly to cut horrible yellow patched grass and and they kept sending invoices. At that point we gave up on Tode. Their lack of professionalism, knowledge and communication was not something we could deal with any longer. By August, we couldn't stand looking at it. We ended up raking up all new dead grass which was days of back breaking work. Early this spring we couldn't find any landscaper who had the time to even give us a estimate for lawn renovation. Covid impacted this industry like many with lack of staff & resources. After we finally were able to get a written estimate for repair=$12K! We decided to put together a detailed letter along with all the evidence including before and after pictures, the estimate for repair, before posting any bad reviews or pursing legal action. We wanted to give him one more chance. At the same time we filed a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau to show how serious we are about not allowing Tode to get away with all the stress, unhappiness, additional labor and financial damages they caused us. The owner's response to BBB was that they didn't cause the damage and that we were just unsatisfied customers. We rejected their reply since no monetary offer was made. Big mistake to go with Tode Landscape.
120723 - Update. Mr. Tode was extremely kind and easy to work with. He rectified every issue with our landscaping plan. In the spring of ‘23 our garden was redone. The front of our house has shade on one side and sunny exposure on the other. He redesigned the front of our home with plants and shrubs that were similar in color and appeal that would thrive in their respective areas. We are very happy and would recommend working with Mr. Tode. I don’t have pictures at this time, but will add in the spring. 092922 - Update. The owner of Tode Landscaping reached out to us and kindly offered to fix the issues with our project. I will update again with pictures when complete. We hired Tode Landscaping because of their reviews, and we needed to hire professionals to design our residential landscaping after a big renovation project. We did not have the luck of working with Greg or Mike, they had great reviews. We worked with another account manager (AH). During the process we went over the sun/shade exposure of our property, as it makes it more challenging, but we were flexible on species and colors. We took the account managers advice on plantings. He assured us they were suitable for their location and gave us a beautiful color print out. It went downhill quickly from there. The plantings and installation were mediocre. Some of the plants detailed on our invoice were listed as 3 gallon plants, but were clearly not. Several plants were sticking out of the ground, some were planted in the wrong location. They were eventually moved by Tode’s crew, but showed signs they weren’t surviving. We notified the account manager shortly after, who said it's normal (new plants dying is normal??) He said he’d come by, but never did. I will add that we had our sprinkler system redone for this project, and had input from the Tode landscape designer to make sure the new garden had proper irrigation. The following spring '22, all 14 of one variety of plant, and several others never came back. What did come back were sun starved plants in the shady section, scraggily and sickly looking, leaning out for sunshine, and more than half a garden that never thrived all spring and summer and are dying a slow death. When I contacted the account manager he said we could buy more plants from them and they would install them. We declined, considering they never installed them correctly in the first place. After spending $10K+ we were, and still are extremely disappointed with poor design, execution and customer service. Bottom line - would NOT recommend.
After striking out with multiple landscape contractors, we got a good lead from a contractor that renovated our kitchen the previous year. I first contacted Tode Landscaping early summer of 2018. Meeting was set after making a quick call to the office, and thats when I first met with Mike. He showed up on time and I could tell he had a lot of ideas and clearly tons of experience. A proposal was supplied a few days later, I signed it and a date for the work was set. When the Tode crew arrived on the first day they worked through the project until it was complete. No breaks except for when there was non stop rain, as they wanted to allow the soil to settle before they moved forward. They were working on the project for 3 weeks straight with the same group of guys from start to finish. They used all their own trucks, equipment, and employees. Very friendly and respectful crew. Always cleaned up nicely at the end of each work day. The project was carried out without any hiccups or surprises. I set high standards for any contractor I hire and always stress that I want the job done properly vs. having done "on the cheap". Prior to wrapping up the job, Greg (project manager) came by and ask if there was anything else that could be done. I pointed out a few concerns of mine and everything was corrected without question. About a month after they completed the project, the crew came back to add some mulch, clean up the edges, and performed some general upkeep. The grass was not growing as we had all hoped due to all the rain we received in August-September, so they came back at a future date to add more grass seed, top soil, and fertiziler. It's always great to work someone who is passionate enough to do whatever it takes to see the best results possible. Overall I am very pleased with Tode Landscape Contractors and I would highly recommend you contact them with your landscape needs!
Mike and his crew are absolutely amazing. They took over the landscaping for our building located in Hackensack on Prospect Avenue as of this spring. Our building has never looked better, the crew comes and gives so much attention to detail and to the overall curb appeal. Hiring Mike and his company was an excellent decision, for our condominium association.
Love them!
