SJ Ward Landscapes in Longmont

S.J. Ward Landscapes built a 24-foot, gently descending, J-shaped walkway from a side entrance of my house to a gate connecting the front and back yards. The walkway had flagstones on top and stacked stones on the sides of an elevated base with the flagstones slightly overlapping the sides of the base. Additional work included remortaring an existing large flagstone patio and first-time mortaring of an another area with a flagstone surface. Steve, the owner, and Chava, the crew foreman, met with me beforehand to ensure that we had a common understanding of what was to be done. I was very pleased with the work. The edges of the flagstone walkway were cut perfectly and the design of the flagstone surface of the walkway was beautiful. Crew foreman Chava was open to my suggestions during the work. and he and the crew did a great job of cleaning up the work site afterwards. Chava and crew members revisited the site twice after the job was completed to do some follow up work, and to make sure I was satisfied with their work. I highly recommend S.J. Ward Landscapes, Chava, and his crew for the design, construction, repair of flagstone surfaces.

So knowledgeable, extremely responsive even on the weekend. Great group of folks. I ve worked with several different crews. Always consistent, honest, they show up on time. No complaints. Exceeded any expectation I could have ever had. There s a reason they ve been in business for so long. Blown away. Highly, highly recommend. So in Spring of 2000 Steve Ward did a lawn, sprinkler, eight aspens, two blue spruces, two walkways, and French drains at my house in Erie, 80516. It came out great and I remember thinking to myself, then, thats a first class operation. There was internet then but it was less of a thing. I sold that place this summer and bought up in Johnstown, 80534. I saw all these SJ Ward trucks doing the green spaces for the developer at Johnstown Farms off of WCR 46 1/2. I got a nice walkout there and though the builder put in lawn, sprinkler, fencing and rock, something had to be done for the front to back access. It was steep, down front to back with a second gradient from the house to the side fence, and just big rocks. I called SJ Ward and told them what I needed but please send out somebody good because it was tricky. Sandy said Steve will come out. I said, great and told her about the Erie house. She laughed and said good but the new system didnt go back that far and she couldnt find it. Well Steve came out, we looked at it, he gave me a good price, and said next week. Then the project manager George called said he wanted to see it, so we met and talked. He acknowledged the double fall line and the steep drop. The bottom.of the gate had 15 degree angle. I wanted the bottom of gate trimmed level and build up a short wall on the low side to get the walkway level, and six French drains. He said they would get it level and didnt need a wall. He gave me a date, said a day and half. I wasnt there when they did the work. I came up the next day, today, 10/25/23. Well, it is beautiful. Really great. Imagine my delight, in this day and age. Great work, great price, on time, no nonsense, Still a first class operation 23 years later. So great to see this ethic in tact and thriving and to benefit twice in the normal course of two jobs. They failed to complete the contracted work, and I had to hire another company to complete the project. The did not respond to communication, and they left cigarettes around my yard.

We are now a year and a half out from when they came to regrade our property, put irrigation, some plants, a fence and some walkway pavers/concrete pad for a future workspace. They graded the dirt towards the house which has been a problem, 3 different irrigation connections have failed mid summer, the sprinkler heads they installed don t cover the property as planned, the concrete pad poured was supposed to be at least 8 inches and is only 3 which means building on it now will be a weight problem. When I called for them to help with the dying grass and connections they would charge for the visits instead of covering for their mistakes and rushed job. They often seem like they don t care and just wanted the money. Oh and I paid 60k for these problems. Would not recommend to an enemy.

Everything they did for us is falling apart (fence, artificial turf, gate, ) and unfinished (irrigation, outdoor kitchen, ). Terrible communication I d put zero stars but it s not an option I d be glad to show photos at request

Company came out promptly to give an estimate . After my 2 inquiries and 8 weeks later have received no response . Owner replied to this review within an hour . Estimator wrote that he had forgotten to send and emailed an outrageous estimate not relative to what we had discussed . I stand by my review .

The crew was on time, responsive and extremely professional. My landscape turned out beautiful. The design is innovative and tailored to fit my needs, vision and budget. I highly recommend SJ Ward Landscapes.

This May I was working with Travis. He drew up the plans but we had to go back several times as the estimate did not match the plans. We had plans to talk on May 31 Tuesday and he did not call. I got an email on June 1st he got busy and that he would be available that Thursday and Friday to talk. I emailed him back and said Thursday would work at 11:30. He never called. Today, 7 days later I get an email he is back from vacation and can talk. I explained to him that he did not communicate that he was going on vacation and that if seemed with the lack of communication he was blowing us off. His response...Sounds good. Very unprofessional. I would not recommend going with this company as Travis did not do a great job at communicating to the customers.

We contracted with SJ for front lawn landscaping including drip irrigation. The foreman spent half a day figuring out how to run the drip irrigation, eventually saying they would have to run pipe from the back yard to the front (not necessary). He then decided it was better to cut a hole in our basement ceiling for a valve. He then cut the hole and put the bleed valve on backwards (we later discovered when water ran all over the basement). SJ then worked out a 3rd way to install the irrigation from the front yard (genius!). SJ Ward took ZERO responsibiity for the uneccessary damage done to our basement ceiling. We had to call a plumber to fix their mistake at our cost. After that fiasco, weve had ongoing service problems. This year we called them in the first week of May related to the drip irrigation and after several follow up calls, were in June with nothing scheduled. If this sounds like a great adventure to you, then go for it. Im sure SJ will be willing to sound awesone on the sales call. Check out my basement ceiling in the pic. None of that was necessary and SJ thought it proper just to leave it as is.

We had a total landscaping project on half an acre which involved hard scapes, driveway, beautiful sod and perennials that was done very professionally with a clean and friendly crew. Very happy with the results. Highly recommend SJ Ward for any of your landscaping needs.

For the several years I used them, there were problems every year. Incompetent workers, sloppy work, missed appointments, no call backs. Never again.

We had SJ Ward install six trees and a water feature. We were amazed at how the water feature turned out - it was much grander than we had expected, and it fits in well with the existing landscaping. Both Steve and Jade are very easy to work with and the price was extremely reasonable for the finished landscaping. I highly recommend their services.

So I contracted SJ Ward Late last fall to do a ~$12500 landscaping work including setting up drip lines and adding or relocating sprinklers. I had bought most of the plants from the tree farm and had them planted as well had SJ ward planted the rest of the plants per the landscape plan drawn by a paid 3rd party. The sprinkler and drip line did not work well, resulted in poor health of some of the plants and part of the lawn. They planted 5 annabelle hydrangea planted and only one is doing well and blossoming. 3 winter gem boxwood all turning yellow. Missing: 3 Goldsturm black eyes Susan on the north side of the back yard and 1 crystal speedwell in the front yard. The 1 year warranty is a joke, since no one contacted me after I emailed and spoke on the phone with Travis, the original sales guy in late June. I would stay away if you are counting on good outcome of thriving plant and professional sprinkler work. Do not believe in the owner s response. I can show you my phone log and there weren t any missing calls from SJ ward landscaping. It is easier to blame the customer, isn t it. Thoroughly disappointed at their dishonesty.

The technician that came out was helpful and knowledgeable and polite I would recommend this company to anybody that needed service

Steve Ward and his entire team at SJ Ward Landscapes is one of the finest landscape designer and installers I have ever experience in nearly 40 years of owning property in northern Colorado. After building a large greenhouse/poolhouse in my backyard, I contracted SJ to completely replace all landscaping in both the front and backyard, including sod, bushes, plants, beds and bedding, and flagstone paths, as well as the riverbed trenches required by the City around the poolhouse. Steve and team not only provided incredible value at a reasonable cost, they were exceptionally communicative throughout and did what they said they would when they said they would do it, including replacing some plants and bushes that later died, but at no cost to me. My wife and I could not now be happier with the appearance of our property throughout and would give SJ Ward Landscapes our highest recommendation for doing the same for you !!

Full thumbs up for SJ Ward. We had SJ Ward do some significant residential hardscaping - tearing out an old concrete sidewalk, driveway and patio, then pouring a new driveway and patio, building a red stone path in place of the sidewalk, and also building a gutter drainage system (to fix a drainage problem on that side of the house). They did a great job overall, and particularly they took care of every small detail we originally discussed with no problems. We have more to do and we will be using them in the near future!

SJ Ward did a fantastic job in re-landscaping our yard in Anthem Ranch. I cant say enough good things about them. They installed a beautiful slate patio with a stone seat-wall. They really exceeded both my wife and my expectations. We made a number off changes to the plan in the field that they willingly made and did not charge me anything additional for the job

The process from communicating our landscape vision to execution by everyone from the Project Manager to the onsite crew well exceeded our expectations. No surprises or hidden costs. The resulting space is now much more functional for our small neighborhood property. Were extremely happy with the work performed and all was done in a fast, professional and friendly manner. The crew was hard working and made sure that they were doing exactly what we were looking to have done. I would not hesitate to re-hire this company to do even more projects to improve our new outdoor living space. Excellent company!

S.J.Ward is a company to do business with. I have used them for the last four years and I cannot tell you how wonderful their employees are! They have gone out of their way to get my yard looking good and to keep it that way! Now that I have placed my home on the market and have had some deadlines to meet, they have been absolutely exceptional in helping to meet those deadlines! I would highly recommend this company! They are the very best! Really unbelievable!

Very happy with the landscaping, patio work. Steve and Ken did a great job... Their quote was little expensive compared to other landscaper quotes that I got but these guys are professionals and totally trustworthy..

Excellent work, even on smaller projects. They did a beautiful job properly installing a long stone raised bed, and re-sodding our front, and they did it very quickly. They treat even a small project with professionalism and importance, which many other companies do not. My only criticism is that there were a number of miscommunications that created some confusion. However everything was sorted pretty quickly, and they are VERY responsive if an issue arises, as well as if you need to contact them for any reason. In regards to cost - they are extremely transparent in their pricing and I only incurred additional cost due to re-sodding a larger area than originally quoted. This is also not something that has necessarily been my experience with others who suddenly start tacking on additional charges until your project ends up costing twice as much as originally quoted. I would definitely use these guys again for any other projects that may arise.

SJ Ward Landscapes built a pergola on one of our decks recently and they did a great job at a good price. We would use them again in the future.

SJ Ward tore down an old deck and rebuilt a fabulous new one for us. Also, redid our front porch which looks awesome, and made suggestions and other improvements and repairs for us along the way. Staff was great to work with and couldnt be more pleased with the outcome! They also support our community in a big way, which we appreciate.

I and H-B Development Corp. have been working with Steve at SJ Ward Landscapes for at least 25 years. Our experience has always been positive. Steve and his team have provided us with many years of honest, value oriented and creative work both residential and Commercial

Wards is reasonably priced and does a terrific job. They do irrigation, retaining walls, flower beds and much more. We were very happy with all their work and the quality of the plants and trees.

Excellent company, We are very happy with the grass, trees and shrubbery selection used in design and installation. Communication was very good and open. Ken (Site Supervisor) was great on following up on details that I thought needed attention especially after the initial 30 days when the weather turned hot and was impacting the freshly laid sod. Kens team adjusted, replaced whatever wasnt up to expectations. Thank you Steve and the SJ Ward Team.

Steve and his team did a great job. I thought we had some difficult situations with both trees and drainage but they handled everything expertly. They came back out three times to check on things I had questions on without hesitation.

Steve and his crew are very talented, timely and cost conscious. They have landscaped two of my homes and did a great job both times.

The Ward crew worked with our electrical contractor to complete trenching for electrical access. They were prompt, courteous and did a good job, from estimate through completion.

We have hired this company several times , the most recent being this Fall.....planting two large trees in our backyard. The crew showed up exactly on time dug, planted and watered two large trees in less than two hours! The crew is incredibly hard-working and fast. Our project before was almost 8 years ago and they completed a huge backyard project which we still enjoy today. Our neighbors hired a different landscape company this past summer ....we watched them take four months to do a simple project! the workers seem to lay around most of the days in the shade. Luckily, we have never had to experience that because we hired SJ landscapes first!! Excellent company, great management and hard-working employees!! We will hire again!!

We had SJ Ward Landscape help us redo both our front and back yard. This included boulders, concrete, sod etc. Steve was awesome from the beginning , making sure to help us create the yard we wanted. His concrete work was excellent, and his crew was very professional. Steve over saw the job from start to finish and was always available and in communication with us on the status of work etc. He always made sure the schedule worked for us. I would and have recommended this company to all our friends and family. We get compliments all the time on our yard and how great it looks. Steve has also come down a few times to help spruce up the yard with new plants, sod and mulch. We will continue to use this company in the future.

Hired them to build us a large water feature. First we had electrical problems, then the earth caved in, then the pump broke and now it leaks. Eight months after they first put it in, it still doesnt work and we have to beg them to come out and repair it. They were happy to take our money but dont seem to care to back up their work.

We are please with the job Steve and crew did to design and install the landscaping at our new home. Steve was open to our ideas and provided some great suggestions as well! He worked closely with our contractor to ensure the work came in on the timeline of the overall project. Thanks Steve!

Steve is a very nice guy....his folks installed a nice patio for me... However the grout between the stones was done with poor workmanship... Steve sent to his guys out to redo the grout... Only to do an equally sloppy job. Steve came out and agreed it wasnt done right but chose not to do anything about it other than leave me with the grout like material to do it myself. Very disappointed. Update Received a phone call the other day from Deidre at Steve Wards office telling me they wanted to rectify my problem... She got back to me today stating that Steve Ward does not want to do anything about it. The irony of my problem is in order to make the patio look correct it need one bag of Poly sand and 1-2 hours of labor ...to make a customer happy. Maybe a total cost of material and labor of $50.... Not $18,000 like so other dissatisfied customers... But in Steve Wards world its not worth it to him to make a customer happy. Avoid doing business with this company at all cost!!!!!

Steve Ward has done a wonderful job on several homes for us over the years. The design team did a great job and the installation was everything we had expected. Any issues were promptly dealt with and we will use them again in the future!

Wards did fantastic stone & concrete work on our patio. Beautiful planter boxes too.

Thought they were a reputable company so we hired them to replace our concrete patio. The one they poured developed a large crack barely a month later. It was like pulling teeth, but they did finally repair that section. During the planning process we agreed to have them add a dye to the concrete, but they ended up mixing it incorrectly and its terribly discolored. It looks as though part of the patio is wet and the rest dry. We have been told over and over again that they would fix it, but here we are almost $18,000 and six months later and they are completely ignoring us. To make matters worse, another huge crack has appeared in a different section. I dont recommend hiring this company, but if you do, be sure to get a detailed written guarantee and dont pay them in full until youre completely satisfied.
